Cadillac Lineup to Double With Flagship Sedan, Small Crossover by 2016
The U.S. market currently accounts for about three quarters of Cadillac’s sales. In 2011 and 2012, Cadillac sold around 200,000 cars, down from the 241,000 units sold in 2007. While Cadillac sales remained steady in 2012, the automaker slipped from fourth to fifth place among luxury brands, finishing behind Acura.
We’re saying it over and over and over that we want Cadillac to be a truly global luxury brand,” Bob Ferguson, vice president of global Cadillac, told Reuters at the Detroit auto show. “We have the core of a very good product set now and we’re working hard at examining the options to make it even better. You can expect a more robust lineup.”
Some are skeptical the automaker can grow in such a short time, especially in Europe where it can take 15 years to build the brand, according to Jim Hall, managing director of consulting firm 2953 Analytics. While Cadillac is a low-volume brand in Europe, GM is also focusing on China where the automaker has had much success with the Buick brand. Chinese production of the Cadillac XTS full-size sedan will begin soon and GM may bring the ATS and ELR over by mid-2014.
Cadillac’s current lineup is comprised of the XTS, CTS, and ATS sedans; Escalade full-size SUV; and SRX crossover. The Chevy Volt-based Cadillac ELR, revealed at the 2013 Detroit auto show, will be the first model in the brand’s growth plan. Omega is the name of GM’s new rear-drive architecture that could underpin a new full-size flagship – possibly called LTS – that would compete with the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class by 2015. Other potential new models could include a small five-passenger crossover aimed at the BMX X1 and a full-size seven-passenger crossover aimed at the BMW X5, the report says. An ATS coupe or convertible could also be on its way, as well as a smaller car in 2016 that would compete with the BMW 1 Series. That model would join the ATS and 2014 CTS on GM’s Alpha platform.
